Clopay cable and drum replacement in Brooklyn typically costs between $130 and $250 installed, and we carry the parts on our trucks for same-day service in most neighborhoods, from Bay Ridge to Prospect Lefferts Gardens. The cable and drum work as a pair: the drum is the grooved spool at each end of the torsion tube, and the cable winds onto it as the door opens. When either one fails, the door usually hangs unevenly, makes a grinding noise, or refuses to move at all. You’ll notice it first as a door that suddenly feels heavy, jerks sideways on the way up, or leaves a frayed steel strand poking out near the top roller. That’s the cable telling you it has given up, and the drum is rarely far behind it.
Which Clopay Models This Applies To
We see this most often on Clopay’s residential steel lines: the Classic series, the Gallery and Coachman carriage-house doors, and the value-priced Intro series. The compatibility gotcha with Clopay is drum diameter. Clopay uses different drum profiles depending on the door’s weight and the torsion spring size, and a drum that is off by even a quarter inch in diameter changes how the cable lays in the groove. The wrong drum will bind, chew through a new cable within months, and throw the balance off enough to strain the opener. The part number is stamped on the flat face of the drum, but if it is worn smooth, we measure the drum’s outside diameter, count the grooves, and match the cable length to the door height and track radius. For Clopay specifically, OEM drums and cables are our default recommendation. Aftermarket equivalents exist and can work, but Clopay’s cable is pre-stretched at the factory, which means less slack in the first year. That matters in Brooklyn, where salt air near the waterfront and the humidity swings of a rowhouse garage accelerate cable rust. A pre-stretched cable resists that early sag.
Fernbrook Garage Doors Brooklyn is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Clopay. We do, however, stock Clopay-compatible cables, drums, and torsion hardware alongside parts for LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and Genie openers, so the truck usually has what your door needs on the first visit.

Signs Your Clopay Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing
- Door hangs crooked or one side sits lower than the other. This means one cable has stretched or slipped off the drum, and the weight is now unevenly distributed. Running the door in this state bends the track and destroys the bottom brackets.
- Visible fraying or broken steel strands near the bottom bracket. Cables fail strand by strand before they snap. If you can see the wire separating, the remaining strands are carrying more than they were designed for and will fail soon.
- Grinding or scraping sound from the top of the door during operation. A worn drum groove lets the cable ride up and rub against the drum face or the header bracket. The noise is the cable shaving metal off the drum, and it only gets worse.
- Cable has slipped off the drum and is wrapped around the torsion tube. This happens when a drum wears unevenly or the cable loses tension. It can damage the torsion spring, and we strongly advise against trying to unwrap it yourself; the spring holds enough tension to cause serious injury.
- Door jerks or shudders halfway through the cycle. When the cable catches a rough spot on the drum, the door briefly hangs and then releases. The jerk loads the hinges and rollers unevenly, and a child or pet near the door can be caught off guard by the sudden movement.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Brooklyn, an installed Clopay cable replacement runs from $130 to $200, and a cable plus drum replacement runs from $180 to $250 for a standard single-car door. Double-wide and custom-height doors fall at the higher end because the cables are longer and the drums are heavier-profile. The price is quoted and agreed before any work starts, and it covers the parts, the labor, the rebalancing of the door, and testing the full cycle. We also lubricate the rollers and hinges with a pet-safe product where there is a choice, and we photograph the clean-up before we leave. The work is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it is not done right, we make it right. No negotiation required.
DIY or Call Us?
We recommend calling us for any cable or drum work, and we say that without trying to scare you. The torsion spring carries the full weight of the door, and the cables are what transfer that tension. When a cable slips or a drum is removed incorrectly, the spring unwinds in a fraction of a second. The force is enough to break bones. Jesse Calder, our owner, learned early in his career that the safest way to work on a Clopay cable is with winding bars, proper bracing, and a second person who knows what to listen for. What you can safely check is the visible condition of the cable: look for frayed strands, rust, or a cable that sits loose in the drum groove. Then call us at (845) 610-0375. Tell me what the door is doing, and we’ll tell you exactly what it needs. We will give you a written price before any work starts, and a live person answers the phone 24 hours a day.
FAQs
Clopay cables in a Brooklyn garage typically last 10 to 14 years, but doors near the waterfront or on heavily salted streets in the winter can lose two to three years off that. Drums wear slower and often outlast two sets of cables, but a cable that snaps and whips can scar the drum groove, so we always inspect both together. Call (845) 610-0375 if your cables are near the 10-year mark and you want a professional inspection.
No. A frayed cable has already lost its structural integrity, and repairing a section of it creates a weak point that will fail under tension, usually while the door is moving. Replacement is the only correct fix. Call us for the correct Clopay-compatible cable matched to your drum and door height.
Most single-door Clopay cable and drum replacements take between 60 and 90 minutes on site. If the torsion spring also needs attention, the visit runs longer, around two hours. We carry the common Clopay drums and cables on the truck, so there is rarely a second visit. Call (845) 610-0375 for scheduling.
Yes. Our trucks carry Clopay-compatible cables in multiple lengths, standard Clopay drum profiles, bottom brackets, and cable clips. For less common Clopay models, we source parts from our local supplier and can usually have them in hand within a day. Call (845) 610-0375 and tell us your door’s model number; we will confirm the part before we arrive.
