Craftsman roller replacement in Brooklyn typically costs $110 – $220 installed, including the parts, labor, and a quick track alignment check while we’re on site. We carry Craftsman-compatible rollers on the truck, so most swap-outs happen the same day we arrive. Most Brooklyn homeowners discover the problem the same way: a door that suddenly grinds mid-travel, or a wheel that’s visibly cracked or missing its nylon sleeve after years of humidity and road-salt air doing their quiet work.
The good news is this is one of the more predictable repairs on a garage door. The part itself is inexpensive. What you’re paying for is getting the right size matched to your Craftsman track profile, doing the swap without bending the track or stressing the cables, and having a technician notice the second roller that’s about to fail before it does. That last part is what turns a $180 visit into a door that runs smooth for another five years.
Which Craftsman Models This Applies To
Craftsman garage doors use a standard residential track system, so the roller size matters more than the model year. Most Craftsman doors built in the last 25 years take either a 2-inch nylon roller or a 1-13/16-inch steel-bearing roller, depending on rail width. If you can find the model sticker on the side of the door panel, that helps. If it’s faded or painted over, we measure the roller stem length and wheel diameter on site and match from there.
Craftsman doors were manufactured under license by several regional plants over the years, which means two identical-looking doors from different Brooklyn installs can carry subtly different hinge spacing. That’s the gotcha most DIY attempts miss. We keep both common stem lengths and a handful of longer-stem rollers in the truck specifically because Park Slope rowhouse garages and Gravesend detached garages don’t always take the same spec.
On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: Craftsman-branded rollers are fine, and we install them when a homeowner requests them. But honestly, a quality 11-ball-bearing nylon roller from a reputable aftermarket manufacturer is quieter and holds up longer than the factory 7-ball roller most Craftsman doors shipped with. We explain the difference before any work starts, show you both options, and let you decide based on how often the door opens and how close the garage sits to a bedroom. Fernbrook Garage Doors Brooklyn is an independent service company, not affiliated with Craftsman, and we stock compatible parts for LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and Genie openers as well.

Signs Your Craftsman Roller Replacement Is Failing
- Grinding or rumbling during travel. The nylon sleeve on the roller has worn through in one spot, and the metal core is now running directly against the track. You’ll hear it most at the curve of the track, where the pressure changes.
- Visible cracks or a missing nylon ring. Rollers are a wear item. Brooklyn’s temperature swings let nylon expand and contract, and after eight to ten years the material gets brittle enough to chip.
- Door pauses or stutters at the same spot every time. A flattened or seized bearing inside the roller means the wheel isn’t rolling; it’s being dragged. That extra friction can eventually strain the opener’s gear or the cables.
- One side of the door sits slightly lower than the other. A roller with a broken bearing may drop out of alignment just enough to cock the door. This can also point to a hinge issue, and we check both during the visit.
- Wobble or shimmy in the bottom panel as the door passes the midpoint of travel. The bottom rollers carry roughly twice the load as the rest. When they wear, the imbalance telegraphs through the whole panel.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Brooklyn, replacing all four rollers (or a full set on a double door) typically runs $110 – $220 including parts and labor. A single roller replacement sits at the low end of that range. A full set with upgraded 11-ball-bearing nylon rollers and a track alignment push sits at the upper end. The written price we hand you before work begins reflects the exact roller count and the condition of your track and hinges. It doesn’t change once we start.
That price covers the rollers, removal of the old ones, installation, a light lubricant where needed, and a track inspection for wear. It also covers our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the door isn’t working right within a year of the visit, we come back and make it right. No negotiation, no re-invoicing. We quote the job before a single tool comes off the truck.

The bottom roller swap is the one repair that does tempt a careful homeowner. And on some doors it is straightforward. The bottom brackets, however, are bolted to the door under constant tension from the lift cables. If you remove those bolts without first securing the door and releasing cable tension, that bracket becomes a projectile. We don’t recommend it.
The middle and top rollers are safer to inspect and even replace if you have the right size spare. What we do tell Brooklyn homeowners is this: rollers rarely fail alone. If one has chipped, the one on the opposite side of the same panel is close behind. If a roller has seized, the hinge next to it has been working harder than it should. A technician’s eyes catch that in about twenty minutes. If you’re already holding the right Craftsman roller and just want the swap done, call (845) 610-0375, and we’ll quote it over the phone and schedule it.
FAQs
Count on eight to ten years for the original nylon rollers on a Craftsman door in the Brooklyn climate, less if the garage is uninsulated or faces salt air from the Narrows. Upgraded 11-ball-bearing rollers can push that to fifteen years with regular door use.
No. A worn or seized roller can’t be rebuilt at a price that makes sense against a replacement. Once the nylon sleeve is cracked or the bearing is flat-spotted, the roller is done. We’ll show you the old part before we discard it, so you can see exactly what failed.
Replacing a full set of four to eight rollers, plus a track and hinge check, takes about an hour. If we find a worn bottom bracket or a cable showing early fray, we’ll quote that separately and get your sign-off before doing the work.
Yes. Our trucks carry Craftsman-compatible rollers in the common sizes and stem lengths, plus nylon and steel options. If your door has an unusual track profile, we can usually match it same day from our local stock or have it delivered to your Brooklyn home within a day or two. Call (845) 610-0375 and Jesse Calder will ask a few questions, quote a price range for your specific door, and get you scheduled.
